Dear Students and Parents,

We welcome your interest in the Andrea Castillo/FIU Ronald W. Reagan Teaching Academy.

Teaching Academy courses are demanding university courses that emphasize higher order thinking skills, oral skills, writing skills, problem solving, teamwork and investigative skills. Highly motivated students who excel academically and are well rounded in their extracurricular activities will be attracted to this program. Students will be evaluated on the following:

_ Middle School GPA  (3.0 unweighted in Core Classes)
_ ELA/FSA Math/EOC or other standardized test scores
_ Conduct
_ Teacher recommendations
_ Writing Sample
_ Pert test 106 score in reading

If you want to apply for admission to the Teaching Academy, you must complete all sections of this application.

Teaching Academy Contract

The Honor Code was created to establish a common understanding as to what constitutes cheating. The penalties are intended to promote growth in character and not simply as punishment.

  • Follow all rules of Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School as outlined in the Student Handbook and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Student Code of Conduct.
  • Certify that each piece of work submitted will be my own work and done by my own hand.
  • Students will take at least six university (FIU) and earn 18 credits hours during their sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school.

Penalties for Honor Code Violations will be based upon the severity of the violation and may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Parent conference
  • Written reprimand (Referral)
  • Dismissal from the Teaching Academy

Academic and Attendance Policy

  • Students must maintain a cumulative 3.0 unweighted grade point average, failure to do so will constitute in automatic withdraw from T.A.
  • Academic Probation: Students’ unweighted GPA is lower than a 3.0 during a nine weeks grading period. Student and parents will be informed that the student has not demonstrated the necessary academic behaviors for success in the academy.
  • Academic Warning: During the grading period immediately following the above probation, the student must demonstrate sufficient progress, or in the next grading period after, he/she will be exited from the Teaching Academy.
  • Students must maintain an acceptable attendance and discipline record at all times.
  • Students in the Teaching Academy must complete 100 community service hours.
I am aware of the honor code, academic and attendance policy, and admissions procedures as stated in this contract and assume all of the responsibilities stated. I understand that any violation of these procedures can result in immediate dismissal from the Teaching Academy. By signing your name in the space above, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the Andrea Castillo/FIU Ronald W. Reagan Teaching Academy's Contract and that you accept the terms of the contract.
I hereby grant permission and consent for my son/daughter to enroll in the Andrea Castillo/FIU Ronald W. Reagan Teaching Academy and agree to all terms of this contract. I understand by signing this form, I am granting permission for Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School to review my student’s grades, standardized test scores and cumulative records. By signing your name in the space above, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the Teaching Academy's Contract and that you accept the terms of the contract.
